    Working with OpenCL to Speed Up a Genetic Programming Financial Forecasting Algorithm: Initial Results

    The genetic programming tool EDDIE has been shown to be a successful financial forecasting tool, however it has suffered from an increase in execution time as new features have been added. Speed is an important aspect in financial problems, especially in the field of algorithmic trading, where a delay in taking a decision could cost millions. To offset this performance loss, EDDIE has been modified to take advantage of multi-core CPUs and dedicated GPUs. This has been achieved by modifying the candidate solution evaluation to use an OpenCL kernel, allowing the parallel evaluation of solutions. Our computational results have shown improvements in the running time of EDDIE when the evaluation was delegated to the OpenCL kernel running on a multi-core CPU, with speed ups up to 21 times faster than the original EDDIE algorithm. While most previous works in the literature reported significantly improvements in performance when running an OpenCL kernel on a GPU device, we did not observe this in our results. Further investigation revealed that memory copying overheads and branching code in the kernel are potentially causes of the (under-)performance of the OpenCL kernel when running on the GPU device

    Dynamics of the trade balance and the terms of trade: the S-curve

    We provide a theoretical interpretation of two features of international data: the countercyclical movements in net exports and the tendency for the trade balance to be negatively correlated with current and future movements in the terms of trade, but positively correlated with past movements. We document these same properties in a two-country stochastic growth model in which trade fluctuations reflect, in large part, the dynamics of capital formation. We find that the general equilibrium perspective is essential: The relation between the trade balance and the terms of trade depends critically on the source of fluctuations.Balance of trade

    We examine the behavior of international relative prices from the perspective of dynamic general equilibrium theory, with particular emphasis on the variability of the terms of trade and the relation between the terms of trade and net exports. We highlight aspects of the theory that are critical in determining these properties, contrast our perspective with those associated with the Marshall-Lerner condition and the Harberger-Laursen-Metzler effect, and point out features of the data that have proved difficult to explain within existing dynamic general equilibrium models.International trade

    HiRes deconvolution of Spitzer infrared images

    Spitzer provides unprecedented sensitivity in the infrared (IR), but the spatial resolution is limited by a relatively small aperture (0.85 m) of the primary mirror. In order to maximize the scientific return it is desirable to use processing techniques which make the optimal use of the spatial information in the observations. We have developed a deconvolution technique for Spitzer images. The algorithm, "HiRes" and its implementation has been discussed by Backus et al. in 2005. Here we present examples of Spitzer IR images from the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and MIPS, reprocessed using this technique. Examples of HiRes processing include a variety of objects from point sources to complex extended regions. The examples include comparison of Spitzer deconvolved images with high-resolution Keck and Hubble Space Telescope images. HiRes deconvolution improves the visualization of spatial morphology by enhancing resolution (to sub-arcsecond levels in the IRAC bands) and removing the contaminating sidelobes from bright sources. The results thereby represent a significant improvement over previously-published Spitzer images. The benefits of HiRes include (a) sub-arcsec resolution (~0".6-0".8 for IRAC channels); (b) the ability to detect sources below the diffraction-limited confusion level; (c) the ability to separate blended sources, and thereby provide guidance to point-source extraction procedures; (d) an improved ability to show the spatial morphology of resolved sources. We suggest that it is a useful technique to identify features which are interesting enough for follow-up deeper analysis

    A trained perceptual bias that lasts for weeks

    AbstractClassical (Pavlovian) conditioning procedures can be used to bias the appearance of physical stimuli. Under natural conditions this form of perceptual learning could cause perception to become more accurate by changing prior belief to be in accord with what is statistically likely. However, for learning to be of functional significance, it must last until similar stimuli are encountered again. Here, we used the apparent rotation direction of a revolving wire frame (Necker) cube to test whether a learned perceptual bias is long lasting. Apparent rotation direction was trained to have a different bias at two different retinal locations by interleaving the presentation of ambiguous cubes with presentation of cubes that were disambiguated by disparity and occlusion cues. Four groups of eight subjects were subsequently tested either 1, 7, 14, or 28days after initial training, respectively, using a counter-conditioning procedure. All four groups showed incomplete re-learning of the reversed contingency relationship during their second session. One group repeated the counter-conditioning and showed an increase in the reverse bias, showing that the first counter-conditioning session also had a long-lasting effect. The fact that the original learning was still evident four weeks after the initial training is consistent with the operation of a mechanism that ordinarily would improve the accuracy and efficiency of perception
